What is Wireless@SG?

Wireless@SG is Singapore's new wireless broadband program that aims to extend broadband access beyond the homes, offices and schools to public places. It is part of the Intelligent Nation 2015 (iN2015) ten-year masterplan to develop Singapore's Next Generation National Infocomm Infrastructure. From December 2006, you get to enjoy three years of FREE (basic tier) wireless connectivity at surfing speeds of up to 512kbps in key public locations in Singapore.

Provided by three local wireless operators – iCELL Network, QMax Communications and SingTel – this free Wi-Fi basic tier* access is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. What's more, usage is unlimited, so you can log on anytime, for as long as you want.

Who is Wireless@SG for?

Wireless@SG is for everyone, especially for "people on the move" – people who require wireless broadband access while away from their homes, schools and offices. These include students, tourists, business travellers and enterprise users such as insurance agents and real estate agents who use widely-available and wireless-enabled devices such as notebook PCs and PDAs. Once connected, users will be able to access all Internet-based services e.g. online gaming, web surfing, instant messaging, VoIP and email.

How much does Wireless@SG access cost?

Nothing. It's free.

How long will Wireless@SG remain free?

Wireless@SG will remain free until at least December 2009.

You may also visit www.ida.gov.sg for their list of Wireless@SG coverage areas.

Please note that as Wireless@SG is being rolled out in phases, some zones may not be fully operational. From time to time, there may also be zones being upgraded and/or under maintenance. Wireless coverage may not be available during these periods.

Will I get free Wireless@SG broadband at home?

At this point in time, free Wi-Fi is not intended for home consumption. However, if you live close enough to a designated hotzone, you may receive some "spillover" signals from the nearest access point.

Can I use my mobile phone's 3G/GPRS/WAP service to access Wireless@SG?

No, you can't. Wireless@SG works only with Wi-Fi-enabled computers, notebooks, PDAs, smartphones and other mobile devices with 802.11b/g compliance. Please check your mobile device documentation for more information.

How secure is Wireless@SG?

iCELL Network's Wireless@SG network uses equipment providing best-of-breed WLAN security, intrusion detection and threat prevention systems. Our network incorporates stateful firewalls for secure connection to the Internet, and per-user VLAN mapping for secure passage through the network. Per-user or per-device security is enforced based on user credentials (802.1X/EAP), hardware identifiers (MAC address, WEP key), and HTML login.
